St Helena Airport
The new Saint Helena Airport opened in 2016 in the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, an island in the South Atlantic Ocean. It is believed that the new airport will bring economic growth to the isolated island which will lead to financial self-sustainability in the long term.
The Saint Helena Airport opened in 2016 in the British Overseas Island Territory of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic Ocean.
It is hoped that the new airport will bring economic growth to the isolated island and eventually lead to financial self-sustainability.
The terminal building accommodates separate ground floor departures and arrivals terminals under one roof covering an area of 2 500m². A firstfloor restaurant and viewing deck provides a new public destination for the islanders. The combined building incorporates the air traffic control towerand fire station and covers an area of 1 250m².
The exterior architecture of both buildings expresses the Napoleonic military history of the island and the control tower is expressed as a beacon of light. The interior architecture is calm and sophisticated.
The island’s remoteness, limited skills availability and infrastructure capacity to supply a once-off construction project of this size meant that a newsupply chain had to be developed from the African mainland.
