Philippi Station

Following the success of the Joe Gqabi Station (previously known as Stock Road), an innovative new overhead concourse station at Philippi is currently being completed. It uses the existing city-owned pedestrian bridge, which spans the railway tracks, to access the station concourse and ticket office. The busy railway operation below is uninterrupted by and during construction – a strong design, engineering and constructability determinant. The station is designed to accommodate a throughput of 12 500 passengers per hour during the work-day morning and evening peaks. The architectural character is luminous and civic and provides a landmark in an impoverished part of Cape Town.
