VULCAN Village
KMH was mandated to undertake a master planning exercise for a new mining town for Mozambique. The brief was to provide housing for 1000 workers and 200 officers along with all the necessary supporting public amenities and infrastructure.
The planning focused on 4 key themes; infrastructure informants and siting, green space network, precincts and Smart City principles. The aim was to create an “an oasis for everyday living” which celebrated fitness, health and well-being, culture, community and leisure. The town was divided into 3 precincts; the Workers precinct, the Officer’s precinct and the Civic precinct
The Workers units were divided in 5 distinct neighbourhoods which were sited optimally according to the terrain. An architectural language, influenced somewhat from the vernacular architecture, was development for the variety of unit types as a whole, with slight differentiation of certain elements to provide an identify for each neighbourhood in an attempt to break monotony.
The Officers’ units are located at the highest point of the site and consist of 2 storey units on larger tracts of land. The lower density allows for a resort like feel as landscaping becomes more prevalent between plots.
The Civic precinct is sited centrally and serves both Workers and Officers precincts. It consists of schools, a hospital, transport hub, sport facilities, community centre, admin building, retail centre and botanical gardens.
