Mount Nelson
KMH was appointed to build the new Green Park wing and restore the Helmsley Hotel and Hof Street villas at the Mount Nelson Hotel to expand and enhance the
commercial and historical value of the property.
KMH was appointed to design 40 deluxe bedroom suites and two penthouse suites on the site of the
old Green Park Hotel adjacent to the landmark Palm Avenue entrance.
A new hotel wing was developed which respects the Victorian architectural character of its predecessor. Working closely with the client and the National Monuments Council, the original Helmsley Hotel and three historic villas dating from 1811-1890 were redeveloped into a contemporary hotel precinct.
Accommodating 5-star requirements within 150-year-old timber and mud brick structures was a particular challenge. The end result is bespoke
suites with unique character and setting creating an excellent balance between commercial interest and historical value.
Together with Graham Viney Design, KMH was also appointed by the then owners, Orient Express Hotels, to create the elegant Cape Colony restaurant within the Original ‘Bay Room’ of the main hotel building.
