V&A Waterfront Union Castle Building
The Union Castle Building (UCB) and the Forum buildings are strategically placed and warranted a holistic view of the area as an important space and place for the Waterfront. The site is the fulcrum of some major precincts and routes within the Waterfront and could be likened to the heart.
The concept expands on the confluence and merging of these movement routes and creates a destination and departure point adding to the visitor’s journey. The re-use and transformation of the Union Castle Building and the Forum, both listed heritage resources play a critical role in rejuvenating the area and creating an important centre piece and one of significant relevance.
The union Castle Building is designed with ‘free flow’ ground floor, a first floor pulled back from its facade over the entrances emphasises the older façade and maximises on the heritage richness which is unique. The internal facade height coupled with the double volumes created draw on much needed natural light and together with a bespoke glazed pavilion restaurant on the roof complete the concept.
