3 Arts Village

The Three Arts Theatre, founded by Ronnie Quibell in 1964, has seen a palimpsest of uses and stories over the intervening years. KMH were approached to redesign the defunct theatre into a new convenience retail centre for the suburb of Plumstead.

The re-design pays homage to the Three Arts rich history, and in so doing, seeks to re-vitalise the cultural landmark for use into the 21st Century in a sustainable and holistic manner. The adaptability of tenancies is key to ensure the continued evolution of the retail mix. This was achieved by providing a new large span first floor and reinforced concrete columns.

The existing reinforced concrete shell was retained and strengthened to maintain the iconic “shed”. The shed is articulated with black face brick boxes that punch through the historical core to fulfil the 7400m² retail offering.

The use of raw exposed concrete and steel, offset against the finer details of the retail palette, combine to form a contemporary industrial aesthetic - on trend with robust longevity.
