Avondale Winery
Avondale has been producing premium quality grapes for over 300 years and having renovated the estate buildings, the owner turned to producing his own wine. KMH Architects, with its reputation and large portfolio of completed and successful wineries, was appointed by the contractor as architects for the new Avondale winery, maturation cellars, tasting rooms and cellar, the wine maker’s accommodation and administrative offices. This enabled the scale of the architectural elements to integrate graciously with each other without the height of the fermentation cellar dominating the other elements. Another innovation was the use of tilt-up precast concrete construction methods for the cellar. The architectural character of the winery complex is respectful of the Cape Dutch tradition using scale, proportion and building materials to best advantage.
